Issue The Office of Development requested assistance in developing a personal presentation for use by Lawrence Small, Secretary of Smithsonian Institution, which would communicate the Smithsonian Institution story, its goals for the future and opportunities for giving. The Secretary would use the piece for personal presentations made to the heads of American corporations. Solution The publication was formatted horizontally, allowing two people to comfortably review the book. Smithsonian’s historic educational legacy and the intended audience dictated a theme of “Americana” communicated visually and in the tenor of the copy. The booklet was approved for use and later submitted to other Smithsonian Institution museums as a template which could be modified for individual museum use. A similar booklet, intended for specific underwriting of museum exhibits and projects was also commissioned. The booklet featured content focusing on the Smithsonian National Zoological Park’s panda exhibit. Again, it was to serve as a template for use by other Smithsonian Institution museums.
